The Next Generation of ELT

The latest upgrade to the HR Smith 503 ELT series utilises the Iridium satellite and MEOSAR networks to provide an independent aircraft tracking and alerting function, in response to the latest GADSS recommendations, due to come into force in 2021. The addition of the Iridium service to the existing full Cospas/Sarsat coverage and transmission of last known GPS co-ordinates hugely increases the probability of accurately locating downed aircraft. The Iridium module allows for live aircraft tracking and can be programmed to activate the ELT under abnormal events. Should the worst happen, the rapid recovery of flight data is essential to build a picture of what happened, to prevent such an incident from occurring again. Autonomy removes the potential for human error, providing us with the basic facts. Autonomous Tracking trigger events include: 

  • Loss of aircraft power 
  • Unusual altitude, attitude, speed or acceleration
  • Diversion from geo-fences or ­flight path 
Plus many other programmable parameters; If any of these user defined thresholds are exceeded the ELT will be activated. Parameters are set according to the aircraft, making it suitable for all airframes. A Distress Tracking option is also available, which activates the ELT in the event of an imminent accident. The activation triggers for distress tracking are designed to meet EUROCAE ED237. Existing 503 series ELT customers wanting to upgrade to the Iridium functionality need only replace the G-Switch module and Antenna, due to the unique modular construction of the 503 series ELT system. The 503 series is utilised globally by all major rotary and fixed wing manufactures and operators.

Crash Position Indicator

The need to accurately trace and track downed aircraft, through the use of a Crash Position Indicator (CPI) or Automatically Deployable Beacon (AD ELT), has continually existed. We strive to make this task easier for SAR teams, pushing the boundaries of technological capability and superseding industry requirements. H.R. The Techtest 503-16 deployable ELT series combines full Cospas/Sarsat coverage, with the transmission of last known GPS co-ordinates to accurately pinpoint downed aircraft.

Designed to deploy in a crash scenario, this system has 3 methods of activation and deployment: manual, automatic G sensor deployment and automatic water switch deployment, with further options for Beacon Deploy Control (BDC) units in case of tail boom break, which means this product offers maximum scenario coverage in conjunction with exceptional performance. 

Our digital accelerometers guarantee a more reliable and accurate activation versus traditional alternatives, in fact the 503 series were the only ELTs to activate every time, in highly stringent and independent testing, by NASA; a testament to our dedication to providing the very best to our customers.

CSAR Personal Rescue Beacon

The HR Smith 500-37 Personal Rescue Beacon satisfies the joint forces requirement to provide their personnel with the greatest chance of safe recovery in an emergency situation, during peacetime and combat missions. Compact and lightweight, this beacon offers user friendly operation combined with text and voice communications.

Minimising the search aspect of any rescue mission is crucial, the sooner the search can begin the greater the chance of successful rescue. The HR Smith 500-37 is able to maximise the possibility of first pass recovery for survivor by coordinating detailed situational awareness information, including precise geopositioning, between survivor and the search and rescue body. During a mission the HR Smith 500-37 can be activated either manually by a survivor or automatically by lanyard, water switch or G-switch.

The HR Smith 500-37 has an external antenna connector allowing the unit to be configured for a particular role, prior to or during a mission. Antenna options include ejection seat, life jacket and parachute installations. On activation during a non-combat mission the 500-37 transmits a 406 MHz signal containing survivor location to a mission control centre via COSPAS SARSAT, whilst also transmitting distress signals on 121.5 and 243 MHz. These frequencies are also used for terminal area direction and two way voice communication between survivor and recovery force.

The Techtest 503-16 deployable ELT series combines full Cospas/Sarsat coverage, with the transmission of last known GPS co-ordinates to accurately pinpoint downed aircraft.  This Class 1 beacon also supports live GPS tracking post-deployment, to assist in rapid asset recovery.

The self-contained memory module allows for up to 25hrs of flight information storage, taking data packages directly from the FDR/CVR, which will provide more than sufficient storage for even the longest haul flights. This means that an exact copy of all information held by the FDR is contained within the memory module, allowing crash investigators more rapid access to the evidence they require to consider establishing a cause.

Automatic Fixed ELT

The Next Generation of ELT

The need to accurately pin-point downed aircraft through the use of an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) has always existed. The increasing use of both COSPAS/SARSAT and Global Positioning System (GPS) has highlighted the need for an ELT System with expanded range capabilities. The Techtest 503 ELT System offers just that; full frequency coverage including 121.5MHz, 243MHz and 406.025MHz. The optional inclusion of last known GPS co-ordinates can be input directly into the system or there is the ability to have embedded stand-alone GPS within the G Switch unit. Housed within high quality durable thermoplastic, the ELT units are through coloured yellow thermoplastic for high visibility. Unique features of the 503 Series of ELT are the ability to have full remote extended range operation, incorporating a multi-axis G Switch, together with both fixed or portable ELT function in one unit. Portable operation allows for fast, snap release of the housing, with simple removal of the transmitter unit for use as a man portable Personal Locator beacon should this be required.
